Culture and Power: Democray

Culture and Power: Democracy will give students the opportunity to study different meanings and practices of democracy around the world and in the United States, with a special focus on the 2024 election cycle. Democracy – a theme that is embedded in and representative of both culture and power – is a malleable concept that can take different forms depending on the historical and cultural context. An anthropological approach to the study of democracy allows us to critically examine diverse ideologies, societal norms, power structures, and innovative practices. Students will carry out a Community Engagement Project on a topic of their choice to apply these concepts to the real world.
