Applications Are Open for the 5th China-America Student Conference!
The China-America Student Conference (ChASC) is a student-led exchange program, initiated in 1934 by university students concerned by the breakdown of bilateral relations prior to the Second World War. Today, an equal number of students from the U.S. and China are competitively selected each year to spend two weeks over the summer together, studying and analyzing China-U.S. relations while visiting three to four diverse regions in the host country. This year we will be holding our inaugural visit to China making ChASC history!
Applications Are Open for the 5th China-America Student Conference!
The 5th China-America Student Conference (ChASC5) encourages participants to embark on a path of collaboration and cultural appreciation. Delegates will delve into invigorating programs, engage in meaningful dialogue, and participate in enriching cultural exchanges, all while gaining a profound appreciation for both commonalities and differences on a global scale. By fostering an environment of collaboration and respect, we aim to build a foundation for strong partnerships and lasting collaboration, navigating the complexities of U.S-China relations with insight and empathy.
The 5th JASC will travel to Beijing, Xi’an/Suzhou, and Shanghai from July 5th* to July 20th, 2025. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. EST on December 29, 2024.
*American delegates will potentially attend a mandatory 1-day orientation TBA inside the United States before the start of the main conference in China.

Eligibility
All students studying in the United States or China are eligible to apply for the 5th ChASC. If you are graduating before the summer within two years (2023) or recently entered college, you are still eligible to apply. Please note which delegation you want to apply for as there are only 10 open spots on each side. Applicants interested in becoming a member of the American Delegation for the in-person conference must have a valid U.S passport and will need to apply for and acquire a Chinese visa prior to the start of the program. (ChASC Executive Committee will assist in providing letters).
ChASC welcomes applications from students of all academic majors to foster a deeper, interdisciplinary exchange. As the official language of the conference is English, no prior experience in Mandarin or Asian studies is required. Those interested in serving as a member of the Chinese delegation should be comfortable actively contributing to scholarly discussions conducted entirely in English.

ChASC is unique in that it is entirely student-run and student-led in nature. The 5 Executive Committee Members, elected by their peers at the end of the 4th ChASC, determine the conference theme, roundtable topics, programming, and oversee the day-to-day logistics of conference planning and execution.
This aspect of ChASC allows delegates to delve into topics that are of interest to them and empowers them to discuss pressing issues. This helps them recognize issues they may one day be tasked with as the next generation of U.S.-Asia leaders.
Delegates will not only develop strong cross-cultural communication skills through their interactions with their peers, but will also have numerous opportunities to network with leading officials, academics, and distinguished professionals in the public and private sectors, as well as prominent business leaders and key figures in the field of U.S.-China relations.
By balancing opportunities for personal, intellectual, and professional growth, ChASC encourages delegates to realize their keen ability to spark meaningful change on the world stage and within their local communities alike.
Academic Interchange
An indispensable component of all ChASC gatherings are the Roundtables, or RTs for short. During the Conference, delegates conduct original, personal research alongside their academic cohorts. Each RT is made up of an equal number of Chinese and American delegates to ensure a balanced exchange of cultural perspectives. Through these intensive discussions on meaningful subjects, participants gain a more nuanced understanding of their international counterparts and actively develop real world solutions in the context of the U.S.-China relationship.
