Mechanical Engineering
English (5), Spanish (4)
I have had the privilege of traveling some throughout my childhood and really enjoy the thrill of experiencing a new state or even new country on a few occasions. Some of my favorite trips have been to Baja California in Mexico, and the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica. Both of these trips exposed me to unique Spanish dialects and the unique cultures of each country. These trips were fascinating and inspired me to pursue Spanish as far as I could in high school, which is why I am currently in AP Spanish 5 and am really enjoying the class. I even get to speak Spanish at my job as an open water lifeguard now.
I think diverse experiences and perspectives are really important for teams of engineers when tackling complicated engineering problems. Especially if one of these engineering problems focuses on a country that most of us haven't experienced firsthand, having someone who understands the country and culture better can be really useful for gauging how well our solution to the problem would actually work and whether or not it would be utilized. When planning my eagle scout project I really benefited from working with my troop’s eagle coach who was a retired environmental engineer and had experience that helped me know how best to design my 5’x8’ decomposed granite pathway from my school, and led to the project being a success.
Ever since I fell in love with Spanish I have wanted to study abroad in college, ideally in South or Central America. Being able to combine this interest with my interest in majoring in engineering would be really exciting for me. It would allow me to achieve my goals of cultural immersion and really make a difference in some of these global communities we would focus on. I think being a part of the global engineering community would be a great way for me to meet like-minded peers and work together to make a difference on a global level. Personally I hope to contribute by always pulling my weight and then some on group projects and working with my global engineering peers whether we be studying for a physics test or working on a project in a foreign country.
