Her current work surrounds an extensive collection of paintings&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wxVLjJ9EoY&amp;t=4s" rel="nofollow">artist Fukunosuke Kusumi</a>&nbsp;produced while confined in the Santa Anita Detention Facility in Arcadia, California and the Amache Incarceration Camp in Southeastern Colorado from 1942-1945. Through this work, she investigates the ways in which Kusumi engaged artmaking to endure seemingly unendurable conditions (gaman) and even make joy in the crevices of everyday trauma. In addition to her research, Julia volunteers with the Amache Alliance, an alliance dedicated to preserving the Amache incarceration site and its history. She also works with the&nbsp;<a href="/cha/" rel="nofollow">Center for Humanities &amp; the Arts</a>, where she helps coordinate projects dedicated to&nbsp;educating 鶹ѰBoulder and Boulder County residents about anti-Asian racism and ways of becoming active bystanders against anti-Asian hate.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Thu, 25 May 2023 17:29:22 +0000 Anonymous 747 at /cha Asian American History, Identity, & How to be an Anti-Racism Advocate (5/25/23) /cha/aapiheritagetalk <span>Asian American History, Identity, &amp; How to be an Anti-Racism Advocate (5/25/23)</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-05-25T10:54:00-06:00" title="Thursday, May 25, 2023 - 10:54">Thu, 05/25/2023 - 10:54</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/cha/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/aapi_talk_with_jennifer_ho_may_25.png?h=f8e7e643&amp;itok=5-uqgGzG" width="1200" height="600" alt="AAPI Talk - May 2023"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/122"> CHA Events </a> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/31"> Events </a> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/125"> Upcoming CHA Events </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/23" hreflang="en">CHA Events</a> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/124" hreflang="en">Events</a> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/168" hreflang="en">Spring 2023</a> <a href="/cha/taxonomy/term/33" hreflang="en">Upcoming CHA Events</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-above"> <div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/cha/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/article-image/dr._jen_ho.jpeg?itok=EcyBYHKC" width="1500" height="1500" alt="Jennifer Ho image"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-text d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><h2>Asian American History, Identity, &amp; How to be an Anti-Racism Advocate: An AAPI Heritage Month Talk</h2> <p>Dr. Jennifer Ho, Ethnic Studies Professor and CHA Director, will talk about what the term “AAPI” means—its origins, its use as label that combines “Asian Americans” and “Pacific Islander” into a single category, and the reason she embraces Asian American as a racial category of unity and solidarity. Dr. Kang will discuss the role of mothers in social movements, especially Asian American activism, from Lily Chin, mother of Vincent Chin, who galvanized nationwide organizing after her son's murder, to Patsy Mink, first woman of color elected to Congress who is known as the "mother of Title IX," to contemporary maternal activism against anti-Asian racism. Dr. Kang studies Asian American feminisms, immigrant women’s work and labor issues, race and reproductive politics, and gender, work and family issues in transnational contexts.&nbsp;</p> <p>People often refer to 1990s Japan as the “lost decade” because of the economic malaise that set in after the bubble burst at the end of the 80s. Dr. <a href="https://politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu/petrice-flowers/" rel="nofollow">Petrice Flowers</a>, Associate Professor&nbsp;at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa,&nbsp;will focus on how this decade and the following were a renaissance of activism, often led by women.&nbsp; Her research focuses on Japan in an international context and investigates the global-local connections between Japan and the world.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dr.&nbsp;<a href="/wgst/misri" rel="nofollow">Deepti Misri</a>&nbsp;is an Associate Professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at the 鶹Ѱ. Her areas of interest span South Asian literary and cultural production, transnational feminist studies, and feminist theory and criticism. Dr. Misri will consider women-led forms of activism and art in the context of Kashmir, also examining instrumentalist state mobilizations of “women’s rights” discourses, and reflecting on avenues for transnational solidarity with Kashmiri women.</p> <h3>ADA Accomodation</h3> <p><em>We will work with ADA Compliance to attempt to fulfill any disability requests for ASL interpreting for this event.
