Part of the 5th Annual Children's Book Festival, partnered with the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder's School of Education.

In response to the alarming surge in challenges to literature, the Center for Humanities & the Arts (CHA) is taking a stand. The CHA is co-sponsoring a panel titled "Book Censorship and Honoring the Right to Read in K-8 Schools and Libraries" at the upcoming Children's Book Festival. The event aims to shed light on the critical issue of book bans and the preservation of academic freedom in educational institutions.

We invite teachers, students, families, librarians and all who are concerned about book bans and challenges to join us for the panel on Book Censorship and Honoring the Right to Read in K-8 Schools and Libraries. This panel event will take place on October 25, from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the Canyon Theater & Gallery - Boulder Public Library (Main Library). Opportunity to purchase the festival authors’ books, signing, and a reception will follow the panel.

Faced with the unfolding war and mass death in Israel and Gaza and potentially the entire region, we invite the campus and Boulder communities to a panel discussion to shed light on the conflict's context and history. We are keenly aware that this is anything but an easy conversation and that there is a lot of pain and suffering, also experienced by many members of our communities on and off campus, but it is an important conversation to have and an institution of higher learning such as �鶹��Ѱ��is one of the better places to have it. Please attend.

This event will be in the Macky Gallery where we will have an array of materials like printed paper, images, and other art supplies available to make a one-of-a-kind pinback button; you just need to unleash your creativity!

The Culture Crawl is a campus-wide event celebrating several cultural heritage sites and groups at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. Stop by the different locations and take part in immersive activities, performances, games and shows. Every location you visit gives you a chance to win a prize.

Antisemitism and Being Jewish in the US

This panel discussion focused on the rise of antisemitism in the last decade—a rise that some might say has never disappeared and has resurfaced with events like the march on Charlottesville, the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue, and recent comments by celebrities. This event was part of the semi-annual Difficult Dialogues event — a series of panel conversations that bring together people from on and off campus to discuss challenging issues from their own perspectives.

It is hard to know how to talk about antisemitism, and this difficult dialogue engaged with multiple topics as well as what it means to be Jewish today, especially in a multi-religious and multi-racial space such as Boulder county. Among the questions our panelists pondered was is: “How does antisemitism manifest in our communities today?", "Are Jews white?", "How is antisemitism different from or similar to to other forms of racism, bias, exclusion, and discrimination?", "Is criticism of Israel antisemitic?"

The tote bags will include tools to help people learn about Asian American history and identity, with the purpose of creating more inclusive communities for AAPI Americans and stopping anti-Asian racism.

Each tote bag will contain:

About the Speaker

Julia Shizuyo Popham’s interests lie at the intersection of affect, material culture, and racialized state violence. Her current work surrounds an extensive collection of paintings artist Fukunosuke Kusumi produced while confined in the Santa Anita Detention Facility in Arcadia, California and the Amache Incarceration Camp in Southeastern Colorado from 1942-1945. Through this work, she investigates the ways in which Kusumi engaged artmaking to endure seemingly unendurable conditions (gaman) and even make joy in the crevices of everyday trauma. In addition to her research, Julia volunteers with the Amache Alliance, an alliance dedicated to preserving the Amache incarceration site and its history. She also works with the Center for Humanities & the Arts, where she helps coordinate projects dedicated to educating �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and Boulder County residents about anti-Asian racism and ways of becoming active bystanders against anti-Asian hate.

Asian American History, Identity, & How to be an Anti-Racism Advocate: An AAPI Heritage Month Talk

Dr. Jennifer Ho, Ethnic Studies Professor and CHA Director, will talk about what the term “AAPI” means—its origins, its use as label that combines “Asian Americans” and “Pacific Islander” into a single category, and the reason she embraces Asian American as a racial category of unity and solidarity. She will share her family’s immigration story to the US as a way to understand Asian American history and identity and will answer questions about any and all things related to Asian American history, society, experiences and general questions about race and racism, especially given the attacks against Asian Americans during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Ho will end the talk by sharing resources on what everyone can do to be anti-racism advocates.

About the Speaker

The daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica, Jennifer Ho is the director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts at the �鶹��Ѱ��, where she also holds an appointment as Professor of Ethnic Studies. She is the past president of the Association for Asian American Studies and the author of three scholarly monographs. In addition to her academic work, Ho is active in community engagement around issues of race and intersectionality, leading workshops on anti-racism and how to talk about race in our current political climate. The Spring 2023 Global Asias Cyber Chat focuses on the role of women in social movements across Asia and Asian America.

This event was originally set to take place on March 7, 2023, and was rescheduled for April 17, 2023. This virtual panel will feature 3 scholars in conversation, roundtable style. Please note we are not recording this webinar.

Speakers and Topics

Professor Miliann Kang, PhD, teaches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the College of Humanities & Fine Arts. Dr. Kang will discuss the role of mothers in social movements, especially Asian American activism, from Lily Chin, mother of Vincent Chin, who galvanized nationwide organizing after her son's murder, to Patsy Mink, first woman of color elected to Congress who is known as the "mother of Title IX," to contemporary maternal activism against anti-Asian racism. Dr. Kang studies Asian American feminisms, immigrant women’s work and labor issues, race and reproductive politics, and gender, work and family issues in transnational contexts.

People often refer to 1990s Japan as the “lost decade” because of the economic malaise that set in after the bubble burst at the end of the 80s. Dr. Petrice Flowers, Associate Professor at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, will focus on how this decade and the following were a renaissance of activism, often led by women. Her research focuses on Japan in an international context and investigates the global-local connections between Japan and the world.

Dr. Deepti Misri is an Associate Professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at the �鶹��Ѱ��. Her areas of interest span South Asian literary and cultural production, transnational feminist studies, and feminist theory and criticism. Dr. Misri will consider women-led forms of activism and art in the context of Kashmir, also examining instrumentalist state mobilizations of “women’s rights” discourses, and reflecting on avenues for transnational solidarity with Kashmiri women.
