Professor David Shneer will give a public lecture on Monday, April 24 at the Colorado State Legislature in honor of Holocaust Commemoration Day 2017. In this lecture, Professor Shneer will talk about the Legislation's role in the Holocaust and what contemporary American can learn from it.

Professor David Shneer is the Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies. His research focuses on 20th century European, Russian, and Jewish history and culture. His newest book, Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War, and the Holocaust (Rutgers University Press, 2011), finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and winner of the 2013 Association for Jewish Studies Jordan Schnitzer Prize, looks at the lives and works of two dozen Soviet Jewish World War II military photographers to examine what kinds of photographs they took when they encountered evidence of Nazi genocide on the Eastern Front.

The Program in Jewish Studies and University Libraries' Special Collections and Archives are pleased to announce the launch of the new Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections website.

The website highlights materials held in the 21 Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections and enables users to explore finding aids, audio/visual materials, photos, and interact with the collections' materials.

The website also has information about the archival process as well as our other Post-Holocaust initiatives, including the biannual Embodied Judaism symposia, fellowships for graduate students and visiting scholars, and ways to support the Collections.

The Post-Holocaust American Judaism Collections are archival holdings at the �鶹��Ѱ�� focused on Judaism and the Jewish-American experience from roughly the late 1940s to the present. The material collected aims to shed light on the religious, cultural, and social movements of American Judaism as well as on the various philosophies of Judaism and Jewish organizations in the relevant period.

The �鶹��Ѱ��’s Peak to Peak Lecture Series and the �鶹��Ѱ��Carbondale Speakers Series present a talk with �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Professor Samuel Boyd titled "Magic, the Bible, and the Biblical Imagination in Jewish Mysticism”Saturday, April 15, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Carbondale Branch Library, 320 Sopris Avenue, Carbondale, CO. Religion and magic are often categories that are considered to be distinct, if not opposites, from one another. In this lecture, Boyd will show why the study of magic is testimony to the vitality of Jewish traditions as well as valuable for understanding our own preconceptions and biases in the modern era. Boyd will look at some theories regarding the study of magic and religion in light of Jewish texts and traditions. He will begin with the ancient Near Eastern context of the Bible and discuss the ways in which understandings of magic have fluctuated over time in biblical texts as well in as in the Jewish interpretive traditions and imagination.

Boyd is an assistant professor of religious studies and Jewish studies at the �鶹��Ѱ�� and a scholar of biblical texts and the ancient Near East. He researches the Bible through various critical methods and in light of wider historical contexts to understand both the production of these documents as well as their history of interpretation. His areas of research include the development of the Pentateuch (or first five books of the Hebrew Bible), legal hermeneutics in the ancient Near East, language ideology in the ancient world, and ritual theory applied to biblical texts.

This event is supported by Carbondale Arts and the Carbondale Branch Library, in partnership with the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Program in Jewish Studies and the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Office for Outreach and Engagement. It is part of the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Peak to Peak Lecture Series, a program that brings �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder humanities scholars to communities around Colorado to share innovative perspectives of historical figures, events and enduring questions.
