Yiddish Studies scholar David Shneer, Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies, and Jewish Studies, gave a workshop for the cast of the DCPA’s production of Indecent, the Paula Vogel meditation on Sholem Asch’s “God of Vengeance,” that was a hit on Broadway in 2018. Indecent focuses on the challenges of taking a hugely popular Yiddish play about a Jewish family that owns a brothel and bringing that play to Broadway in 1923. Six weeks after playing on Broadway and after significant pressure from Reform rabbis, the New York vice squad arrested the cast and producer and closed down the production.

Just two days after returning home from the Helix program, a Yiddish cultural history tour through Belarus and Lithuania for which he serves as faculty advisor, Professor Shneer provided a crash course in Yiddish theater history in general, and Sholem Asch specifically. He then coached the cast in proper Yiddish pronunciation as he worked with the dialect coach, Mary Mac, on the difference between rolled “r” and throat rolled “r” sounds. Currently, he is helping tech with the proper Yiddish supertitles and is looking forward to seeing the final production, which opens on September 6.

In Professor David Shneer's latest article, "How Jewish Can One Fiddler Be?: Reflections on the Folksbiene’s Fidler afn dakh," he and colleague Professor Rebecca Kobrin of Columbia University consider why this Yiddish version of Fiddler on the Roof (with English and Russian subtitles) is the best rendition they've seen. David learned about the Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof from his husband’s non-Jewish aunt, who lives on the Upper West Side. Auntie Kay, as we call her, has the pulse on Jewish New York like no one else, even though she’s not Jewish. He then emailed his culture-maven colleague in New York, Rebecca Kobrin, to see if she wanted to join him and his husband on Friday (a midday matinee before sunset, of course) at Fidler afn dakh, the newest production of the Folksbiene. After three hours of laughing, crying (okay, neither of us cried but plenty of tears were shed in the intimate theatre space), and applauding, we left the theatre agreeing that this was the best production of Fiddler we have seen.

Professor Shneer is the Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies.

Professor David Shneer had a busy September as he gave a keynote lecture at the European Day of Jewish Culture on the future of global Jewry. He then presented at the University of Kentucky launching their annual lecture series with a talk titled, “From Saving Soviet Jews to Being Saved By Them,” and then spoke on a panel after the film The Yellow Ticket. Through the fall, he will be presenting “Art is My Weapon” at the University of Toronto and in December, participating in a seminar on Jewish literary culture in post World War II Soviet Union.

Professor David Shneer will give a public lecture on Monday, April 24 at the Colorado State Legislature in honor of Holocaust Commemoration Day 2017. In this lecture, Professor Shneer will talk about the Legislation's role in the Holocaust and what contemporary American can learn from it.

Professor David Shneer is the Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies. His research focuses on 20th century European, Russian, and Jewish history and culture. His newest book, Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War, and the Holocaust (Rutgers University Press, 2011), finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and winner of the 2013 Association for Jewish Studies Jordan Schnitzer Prize, looks at the lives and works of two dozen Soviet Jewish World War II military photographers to examine what kinds of photographs they took when they encountered evidence of Nazi genocide on the Eastern Front.

In November, David Shneer, Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies, and his musical collaborator Jewlia Eisenberg performed Art is My Weapon: The Radical Musical Life of Lin Jaldati at Temple University and as the DeVoy Visiting Artist-in-Residence at Franklin and Marshall College. In November, Shneer also conducted research in Paris with Yahad in Unum, founded by Father Patrick Desbois to explore the forensics of the killing fields of the Holocaust in the former Soviet Union, and particpated in a seminar for European Holocaust educators.

In December, he organized a seminar at the annual meeting of the Association for Jewish Studies on Post Holocaust Cultures, for which he produced a paper, “Testimony for the Dead and the Living: Elie Wiesel, Lin Jaldati, and the Politics of Moral Leadership.” Stay tuned for the papers presented at the seminar to appear as a book.

He also continuing serving as editor of East European Jewish Affairs, whose upcoming edition is a special issue dedicated to Russian Jewish American Culture with a focus on female culture producers. There will be a day-long festival at the Center for Jewish History, in New York on Sunday March 5, launching the journal, at which many contributors will appear, including the Forward’s deputy art director Anya Ulinich, poet and scholar Polina Barskova, and photographer Alina Bliumis. The festival will close with a concert by Svetlana Shmulyan.

David Shneer had a busy summer teaching at Northwestern and the Yiddish Book Center and giving talks about Soviet photography at the Jewish Museum Amsterdam and about Yiddish cabaret at the Jewish Music Institute in London in August. He conducted research on a fellowship at the Center for Creative Photography for his upcoming book, Grief: The History of the World’s First Holocaust Liberation Photograph and the Man Who Made It. In addition, he has developed a cabaret performance related to his second book project on Yiddish music between fascism and communism with his collaborator, Jewlia Eisenberg, which will have its formal debut in Pennsylvania at Franklin and Marshall College in November. He has also published several new articles and looks forward to launching new courses on the global history of the Holocaust and genocide, in conjunction with CU’s Mazal Holocaust Collection at the �鶹��Ѱ��Libraries.

David Shneer, Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies, committed to using his sabbatical to stretch his scholarly self in new directions. To that end, this fall, he presented his book, Lin Jaldati: Trümmerfrau der Seele, in Berlin at the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in a talk about the book in German. He also is returning to his musical roots, performing “Art is My Weapon: The Life and Work of Lin Jaldati,” a music, spoken word, visual experience that premiered at the Association for Jewish Studies conference in Boston this December. In addition, Shneer published two peer-reviewed articles: “Yiddish Music and East German Antifascism: Lin Jaldati, Postwar Jewish Culture, and the Cold War,” Leo Baeck Institute Year Book, Summer 2015: 1-28, and “Documenting the Ambivalent Empire: Soviet Jewish Photographers, Birobidzhan, and the Far East,” in Michael Brenner, Martin Schulze Wessel, and Franziska Davies, eds., Jews and Muslims in the Tsarist Empire and the Soviet Union (Munich: Vandenhoeck&Ruprecht, 2015): 141-164.

He also gave the keynote address, “Why Teach Genocide?" at the inaugural teachers’ conference for Partners in Action for Genocide and Holocaust Education in October.

In his spare time, he has been overseeing the Yiddish DILS course at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, and he welcomes beginners interested in learning the 1000-year old vernacular language of European Jews.

David Shneer, Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies, had a busy summer of globetrotting. He served as scholar-in-residence for the Helix Project that took students to Belarus, Lithuania, and Latvia. Next year, he plans to open a competition for a fellowship to support at least one �鶹��Ѱ��student to participate in the study program, so stay tuned for more information.

Following that, he gave a talk at the International Slavic Studies conference in Makuhari, Japan, about his new book project, Grief: The History of the World’s First Holocaust Liberation Photograph and the Man Who Took It, and will be presenting a paper on the subject at USC’s Casden Institute on Wednesday, September 9.

David Shneer, Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History and Professor of History, Religious Studies and Jewish Studies, has a busy summer in store for him. He will be making his annual pilgrimage to the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst in June to serve on the faculty of the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program including one of CU’s own Jewish Studies undergraduate students, Alexis Aeang. After that, he will serve as the historian-in-residence on the Helix Program an immersive travel program to historic Lithuania produced by Yiddishkayt LA. If that wasn’t enough, he will then travel to Japan to participate in the International Council for Central and East European Studies’ World Congress in Chiba, Japan, at which he will present research related to his new book project, Grief: The History of the World’s First Holocaust Liberation Photograph.
