Associate Professors Craig Konnoth and Scott Skinner-Thompson will present on the implications of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission at the University of Colorado's Diversity and Inclusion Summit, to be held Nov. 13 and 14, 2018.
The session, "No Cake for You: Anti-Discrimination Law After Masterpiece," will be Wednesday, Nov. 14, 1–2:45 p.m., in the UMC Glenn Milller East Ballroom on the Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder campus.
Session Description
Just what is and isn't discrimination? The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Colorado's own Masterpiece Cakeshop case raises important questions about the future of anti-discrimination law. Our Colorado Law professors will analyze the implications for LGBTQIA rights and religious freedom. What's in it for you? In a 7-2 decision issued in June 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Jack Phillips, a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex marriage celebration. Konnoth wrote an for the case in support of the anti-discrimination law in question, arguing that the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act "fulfills Colorado’s compelling interest in protecting the rights of all its citizens, including LGBT Coloradans, to participate with equal dignity in the 'transactions and endeavors that constitute ordinary civic life in a free society.'" The brief was cited by the American Civil Liberties Union and the state of Colorado in their arguments. Skinner-Thompson also contributed to the amicus brief.
The summit kicks off Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. with a keynote session featuringÌýDr.ÌýBeverly Tatum, a national leader on theÌýtopics of racial identity development, race and education, strategies for creating inclusive campus environments, and higher education leadership. This free event is open to all students, faculty, staff, and city of Boulder employees.
