Heidi Shyu, under secretary of defense for research and engineering at the U.S. Department of Defense, visited �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder to glimpse the future of cutting-edge research. During this visit, Shyu toured labs, listened to short lectures by �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder researchers, and participated in a spirited roundtable discussion campus leaders.

The 2023 Research & Innovation Seed Grants, awarded by �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder's Research & Innovation Office (RIO) and the Office of the Provost, are funding 25 new projects for up to $75,000 each. This year’s awards include five projects spurred by a new pool of funding that encouraged external partnerships by leveraging matching funding from industry, national labs, universities, community nonprofits and others.

Tandems for Efficient and Advanced Modules using Ultrastable Perovskites (TEAMUP) has secured $9M in federal funding from the DOE's Solar Technologies Office. Led by RASEI Fellow Mike McGehee (Chemical and Biological Engineering), the consortium brings together researchers from labs across the country to develop a near-term solution for more efficient solar panels.

The �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder Department of Physics has received a $94.5 million award from NIST to continue the collaborative Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) for the next five years. Started in 1994, the PREP program provides funding for undergraduate and graduate students in physics and other departments to work with researchers at NIST on cutting-edge projects, including new atomic clocks, precision quantum measurement and more.

Since its genesis, LASP has been instrumental in positioning the university as a hub for the state’s aerospace and defense economy, the largest per capita in the nation. This leadership will continue this week, when representatives from LASP and other �鶹��Ѱ�����affiliates participate in the 38th annual Space Symposium.

The Distinguished Research Lectureship is among the highest honors bestowed by the faculty upon a �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder colleague. Each year, the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) requests nominations and a faculty review panel recommends one or more faculty members as recipients. The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 22, 2023. Nominations should be submitted online.

Miller will discuss a variety of topics including her work on indoor air quality in our homes and the lessons learned about airborne disease transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic that are still broadly applicable. “It will not be a technical lecture at all, and my hope is that people will leave with concrete ways to improve their health in relation to air pollution exposure,” she said.

�鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of Massimo Ruzzene to the position of vice chancellor for research and innovation and dean of the institutes, effective March 20.

Pam Ronald, distinguished professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the Genome Center at the University of California, Davis, will deliver this year’s Rose M. Litman Memorial Lecture in Science on April 27.

“Since the discovery of DNA in the 1950s, we have amassed an amazing amount of knowledge about how biology works at the molecular level,” said DeDecker, a teaching associate professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at �鶹��Ѱ�����Boulder. “We are now in a position to use that knowledge to actually build new life—to engineer organisms to do new things that can address some of the world’s biggest problems.”
