Gender and Film

This course examines depictions of the construction of gender, gender identity, and sexuality through representations that either support or interrogate the dominant culture. So, we’ll look at a range of femininities, masculinities, as well as discuss cis-gendered and trans-gendered representations along with the intersectionality of ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality.

We begin by exploring the formulaic Hollywood film and its massive influence by first looking at the kinds of stereotypes it circulates about specific people and/ or groups, and then by examining films that shatter these stereotypes and seek authentic expressions of identity, human diversity, and experience.

Students will learn the ways in which film influences our perceptions about each other and will expand the range of each student’s understanding of the experience of individuals and groups who have been marginalized in society.
