Before joining Leeds, Bernstein completed a doctorate in financial economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His primary area of research is empirical corporate finance, but his interests are policy and finance and include economic history, asset pricing and household finance. He has looked at the effect of financial regulations and institutions, including the Federal Reserve, rating agencies, centralized clearing and mortgage assistance programs.
