One thing that traveling has positively done is that it exposed me to many ideas. It allowed me to explore things we didn't have in the United States. For example, I witnessed firsthand the incredible transportation in South Korea and Spain. It's incredibly efficient, and the public transportation was good enough to explore the world around me. It allowed me to observe and realize what works to benefit the community as a whole.
However, another thing that travelling has done is also expose me to the struggles. In other countries, that’s when things take a different turn. In the country of Malaysia, the infrastructure is not as well developed. In New York, I witnessed problems in the subway station, as it was dirty. This showed me what does not benefit the community as a whole. I still remember the dirty floors in New York and the poor ventilation when it was scorching hot in Malaysia.
Overall, exploring various countries allowed me to understand what works and what does not work firsthand.

Global experiences and perspectives allow for more diverse thinking and can even allow more creative ways of thinking.
I learned this firsthand when I explored cultures. Exploring different cultures allowed me to see that cultures have different ways of thinking. For example, in Dia de los muertos, they celebrated the dead instead of mourning it. When I first heard of this holiday, I was confused but interested. Normally, I associate death as bad, so when would people celebrate it?
As I got curious and learned more, I realized that it wasn’t just celebrating the dead people, but it was about honoring their lives and celebrating when they have lived. Global experiences and perspectives such as this one, allow us to think more creatively instead of focusing on a single perspective.

This is especially true with the goals and values of the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and Resilience. With many countries still developing, there are a lot of problems still needing to be solved. I want to be part of it because I want to help others. It will help me apply the things I’ve learned in real life, but most importantly, my work will help others tremendously. This is why I want to be a member of Global Engineering: I want my work to make an impact on those who need it the most. It will help expand my thinking and be more thoughtful about the world’s issues.
I plan to contribute by using my Computer Science skills to help with programming in technology. I could program a simulation, allowing my classmates to understand problems and help assist them in the real-world problem they are trying to solve. I could also program technology as well, such as certain button presses when managing solar panels. I’ll contribute by making it easier for people using technology to solve problems.
